As she waved goodbye and started her fall, he reloaded the camera and caught the last second of her life, frozen in time 15 feet above the cold sidewalk below. On May Day, 1947, after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. “He is much better off without me… I wouldn’t make a good wife for anybody.” She went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building.
